The circle is no coincidence. It is the method.

People experiencing an Open Space Conference for the first time are often surprised by the large circle. No stage. No rows. No “front row”. No tables.

The circle is far more than a seating arrangement. It creates a space in which genuine encounters can take place.

In the circle, everyone is visible. Leaders, employees and experts – everyone sits at the same level. Different perspectives, experiences and interests become part of a shared dialogue. This changes the dynamics of an organisation.

The circle signals:

• Every voice matters.
• Every person takes responsibility.
• The entire system is invited to contribute its ideas.
• Solutions are developed together – not only from the top down.

Especially at the beginning, a certain degree of uncertainty often arises. Who takes the lead? Who speaks first? What is expected of me?

This uncertainty is not a mistake. It marks the transition from an externally controlled event to genuine self-organisation.

As a facilitator, it is important to allow this phase to unfold. Rather than explaining or directing too quickly, the facilitator must trust the people and the process. This is precisely where Open Space begins to reveal its greatest impact.

The circle is therefore not only the spatial centre of a large-group event – it is also its cultural and psychological centre.

This is where change begins.
